NYC Day 4

We got up on Monday morning, and five of us ladies headed to the ferry that took us out to the Statue of Liberty and then on to Ellis Island (yes, the ferry to these attractions...not the one that went past it!). Three of the ladies on our trip headed out early to the Today show. As we were getting ready we saw Carla in the crowd of the show. We had seen the Statue on the harbor cruise and also on the other ferry ride, but it was so much more awesome to see her close up. The security to get out to the statue was much more stringent than airport security. They made Kassi remove a short sleeve zip up shirt, which was really embarrassing for her since she had on a camisole top underneath, so her garments showed until she got through the security line. The metal detector kept going off as Kris walked through, so they ended up frisking her. That was bad enough, but at the end of the frisking, they grabbed the front of her bra and shook it (I guess to see if anything would fall out!). So, I told them now that they had stripped and been groped, it was time to go and see the statue! I laughed because Becky hate to have her picture taken, so of course, here is her hand in front of her face. I loved this photo of the two girls with their torches raised. Walking through the displays on Ellis Island afterward was very somber. It was amazing to see photos of people who came to this country with so little, but looking for freedom. They had a library where we were able to search for ancestors that had come across the ocean with the ship manifest records. One person we read about in the museum said they borrowed a suitcase to bring with them to America so that no one would see that they didn't have anything to bring with them. That was such a foreign idea to me after moving to our home almost 2 years ago with truck upon truckload. I can't imagine not even owning anything to put in a suitcase for me or my family. We were trying to figure out how in the heck the boots on the right would go up that far on someone, because the tops were as narrow as the bottoms, but then read they were pleated boots, so they only came up to the knee. I thought this book that was an ABC book was really interesting. Here is a picture of our boat. I had to take a picture of the Ritz, even though we didn't stay there. We did a lot of shopping on this day, and then stood in line for half price Broadway tickets. Six of the ladies went to see Phantom of the Opera, and Kristen and I went to see Rock of Ages. The music was incredible (but then, I love 80's music). We almost left at intermission because even though the music was great, the storyline was kind of nasty. Kris went and talked to an usher at intermission and he assured us the second half would be more music related, so we stayed. The funny part was that they handed each of us fake lighters as we entered the theater that were really mini flashlights. They encouraged people to sing along and wave the lighters. Pretty entertaining!
