Denver Trip

On Friday, November 20th, I picked up the boys after school, we gassed up the car, and headed to Salt Lake City. Greg was already in SLC because of a UPA board meeting. Greg had told me our flight was at 6:00. As we headed in to SL to pick Greg up from a park and ride parking lot, Greg called me a little stressed. He had looked at the tickets as he was packing up his stuff, and saw that he had messed up. Our plane tickets were for 5:15. I picked him up at 4:45! We drove straight to the airport instead of parking at a cheaper facility and ran like crazy through the airport. We got to our gate just as they were announcing the "B" section. I still can't believe we made it! After getting to Denver, we drove to find our hotel. The kids were starving since it was well past time for dinner. We found a pizza place called Anthonys. We ordered a large pizza, thinking we could easily eat it. Until we saw how LARGE their large pizza was! The next morning, we got up and went to find the practice facility where Tyson would be competing on Sunday. Afterward we decided to see if we could find the Denver temple. As you can see, found it. It was incredibly busy there though. We had to park the car out in a neighborhood and walk in to see the temple because the lot was full. We had a mini snowball fight on the way back to the car. It was strange to see snow when we didn't have any in Utah when we left. After seeing the temple, we headed to find Invesco Field. Greg wanted to make sure and take pictures then, so it wouldn't interfere with being at the game ready to take part in all the pre-game excitement. We visited the Bronco store and Tyson practiced out in front for the competition the next day. Downtown had a snowboarding exhibition that we went and watched for awhile. It was pretty impressive. The city had built some special ramps, so the snowboarders could slide down, and then jump up on rails and things like that (it looked like when you watch skateboarders). It was pretty cool. We also stopped at a museum in downtown Denver. We went and found the Coors Baseball field afterwards and then headed for a late lunch/early dinner at Casa Bonita. We hadn't been there for years! It is the restaurant that Larry Miller based the Mayan off of. There are arcades inside, cliff divers, jugglers, pinata breaking activities, a "haunted cave" you can walk through....etc. The food is just OK, but all the other stuff makes it a really fun place to visit. After eating, Greg talked me into stopping at a store on Colefax Ave. If you know the area, you know it is a bit scary. We stopped just as it was getting dusk. The men running the store invited us inside to check out more items. It was a store/barber shop. They also offered to cut our hair for us. After this experience, we stopped at the Cherry Creek Mall. It is enormous! But belive it or not, they had no Denver Broncos shirts or souvenirs. They did have a huge Polar Express display that you could walk inside and feel like you were inside a snowglobe though. We were covered in fake snow....and it wouldn't brush off! We ended up buying shirts and souvenirs from the local Target. Pretty funny! We got up early Sunday morning to go to the competition at the Broncos practice facility. Tyson ended up taking third place overall (that is out of four states worth of kids). Our city's recreation director, Marc Christensen and his wife, Allison, volunteered at the competition. We also had a girl Tyson's age from Tremonton who participated named Brinley Beuss. She also took third. After the competition we headed to the game. Kaden and Tyson posed on enormous football equipment, and then with a strange man from Denver who was having his 59th birthday at the field. He posed with the boys with a picture, but he laid down his sign he was carrying around! Our seats for the game were CLEAR UP THERE!!! As you can see, we got there really EARLY for the game....can't miss any sports excitement in our family! Greg and Tyson's seats from the competition were over a section from where Kaden and I were able to get seats. Kaden spent the whole time there counting how much beer the people were buying and being shocked by it all. It was pretty cool to hear Tyson's name called over the stadium of thousands of people. Greg has a pretty good zoom on his camera, so you can see Tyson as he got to show off his passing skills at half-time. Tyson also received a jersey and a football. He was pretty pleased with it all. We had to leave before the game was over to catch our flight home so we could be home to work on Monday. It was a whirlwind trip, but we had fun.

Oh I love this update! I didn't hear about some of this stuff, but I've got to ask...what did the sign say?

Something like...."Today is my Birthday...wish me a Happy Day" and then it had the date of his birthday...which is how I knew how old he was....and I don't know if the picture does him justice....but he was dressed really wild....and he was really loud and kept yelling over at people....crazy Denver fans! Lots of people there with blue wigs....orange spikes.....interesting atmosphere!
